Now that the opening of the movie version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been delayed until next summer, its original date of November 21st, the prime weekend right before Thanksgiving, was left wide open. And what movie should choose to take its spot, but the first movie of the franchise that just might be breathing down Harry Potter’s back, Twilight. Twilight was originally supposed to open on December 12th. Now it gets to take advantage of a much longer holiday season.

I recently wrote about possible reasons why the Harry Potter’s opening was delayed. Now, the MTV movie blog has a theory that the Half Blood Prince might have been postponed to avoid competition with Twilight which was set to open only a few weeks later. If the producers really did postpone the movie for that reason than I think there must be something wrong with the movie. I know that Twilight has become extremely popular, but I don’t think its popularity has taken anything away from the love that is out there for the Harry Potter franchise. Why does everything have to be a competition. The holiday season is long enough for fans of that genre to see both movies.

  1. desperateblogger :

i’ve read all four books of the Twilight Saga and I must say the swooning female readers have the right to. i believe, the Twilight movie will be more “much awaited” for the book is current.

  2. I’ve realized that in May, June and July, it was all superhero blockbuster hits. August is mostly comedy and spoofs, like Disaster Movie and Hamlet 2.

In less than two weeks, I’m heading to the Toronto International Film Festival for the screenings and press junket for The Brothers Bloom and RocknRolla, which are two action-comedy/mobster movies coming out around the same time but from different studios. These two films will be releasing in theaters everywhere in mid to late October. In Nov, you’ll have 007.

It seems when one studio has a good idea, the others try to produce something similar or in the same genre in order to try to compete and gain some a share of the market. We’re wired to always want the best. We’re always competing, whether it be in movies, with world records, etc…

  3. I haven’t read any of the Twilight books but I’ve received mixed reviews which is why I am really interested in it. I was at National Bookstore today and they had hardbound copies that go for 649.00, Fully Booked has them at 695.00. I wasn’t willing to spend that much so I’ll look for a paperback edition. Hehe 🙂
