My two-year contract with Verizon for my iPhone 4 was finally up a few weeks ago. I could finally get the much newer, lighter and faster iPhone 5 I’d been waiting for. Since our local Verizon store was out of the iPhone 5, we went to a Best Buy Mobile Specialty store to purchase my phone. That was when I learned that I could make money by trading in my old phone, and that you can even wait to trade in your old phone. (It was during this in-between time that I was approached by Best Buy to write about their Trade In campaign.)

Trade In Your Old Phone at Best Buy

So you must be wondering how to trade in your old phone at Best Buy. This is how it works:

1. Go to the Best Buy Mobile Trade In Your Old Phone web page, put in your zip code and search for the closest mobile specialty store.

2. If possible, it is best if you delete everything off your phone yourself. If you want the employee at Best Buy to transfer your contacts and data for you (for free), you can wait and wipe your old phone when you get home and trade in your old phone at a later date. That is what I did.

3. When you trade in your old phone, you can get up to $200 back at Best Buy Mobile specialty stores. It depends on the phone and the condition. For my iPhone 4 in perfect condition, I would have received $100 but I forgot my charger, so I got $95. But I also brought my old iPhone 3G, not expecting anything and received $25 for that. All payment is in Best Buy gift certificates.

4. One thing that impressed me was that they took my address and phone number. They run a check on all trade-in phones to see if they were stolen. It hadn’t even occurred to me that this is probably what many thieves do with stolen phones.

5. Both the employees I dealt with when purchasing my phone and then when trading in my old phones were very friendly and helpful. I had no idea that they did this every day!

Trade In Your Mobile Phone at Best Buy

We have bought many mobile phones before in my family and we never realized before that we could do it so easily at Best Buy or that they even had Mobile Specialty Store. Even if you don’t want to trade-in your old phone, but would like to purchase a new one, explore Best Buy Mobile specialty stores:

  • These shops are found locally in malls or in your neighborhood shopping centers.
  • They are focused on mobile devices and accessories.
  • The staff is highly trained, yet non-commissioned, so they can help determine the right phone for you, as well as compare plans across the carriers.
  • You can also shop for tablets and accessories.
  • When you walk out the door with you new phone, you are good to go. It is activated with contacts and data transferred over and you can begin enjoying it immediately.

For more on Best Buy Mobile Specialty stores go to the Best Buy Mobile website. While there you can check to see if you are ready for a new phone, check for deals on new phones and find out more about Best Buy Mobile Specialty Stores and why and how you should trade in your old phone. We looked into this just a week or so ago! Totally worth it and an awesome way to recycle them rather than throw them in the junk drawer!

  3. It is great what they are doing. Now, if only I knew about this a couple of months ago I would have traded in my old, beat up iPhone!

  4. After you bought the phone from Best Buy, could you still get service from Verizon?

  5. this would be great, I have some old phones why not trade them in?
