There are so many songs that bring back memories for me. Most bring back memories of where I was, what I was doing or friends that I was with. But other than summer, there are not many that specifically bring back a memory of a season. Here are 10 summer songs from my teens and twenties that remind me of summers past.

Summer Songs Maggie May

1. 1971 Maggie May (Rod Stewart) – Maggie May was the most played song on the radio that summer. (Radio was the only way to listen to music when you were out).  I still associate Maggie May with sunburns.

2. 1972 Saturday in the Park (Chicago) – My family went on one of our many trips to the Catskills that summer and this song reminds me of that trip.

3. 1973 Kodachrome (Paul Simon) – I remember going to a friend’s house with a group of people on the last day of school and this song came on and it all seemed so perfect.

Summer Songs Ramblin Man

4. 1973 Ramblin’ Man (Allman Brothers) – Heard this song everywhere because the Allman Brothers were both Country Rock or Hard Rock but this song crossed into Pop, so you couldn’t escape it. Luckily I loved the song so I didn’t want to.

5. 1976 Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (Elton John, Kiki Dee) – Here is a song that I never loved, but I did like at first. But by the end of the summer of 76 I had enough. It is listed because it brings back such memories of being on the beach and at bars that summer (drinking age was 18) that it might bring more memories than others, but it is not a song I play anymore.

Summer Songs Go-Gos

6. 7. 8. Early 80s Don’t You Want me (The Human League), Our Lips are Sealed and Vacation (The Go-Go’s) – I put these together because these songs were very big during the summers when I was a single young adult, living in NYC, going to the Hampton’s and Fire Island occasionally, during the summer. These were some of the most popular songs playing and my favorites.

9. 1985 Centerfield (John Fogerty) – This wonderful song about baseball came out right around the time that the NY Mets started to thrive and I became a fan again. 1985 and then, the best Mets year ever, 1986,were the two years I enjoyed baseball the most. And Centerfield was often playing in the background.

10. 1986 Glory of Love (Peter Cetera) – The summer my first child was born. This was the most played song that summer. Need I say more.

You can now listen to any or all of these 10 summer songs in my Spotify playlist below:

  1. You’re right! Old songs really do bring back memories BIG TIME! Thanks for remembering for me all of those great songs from the seventies and eighties! LLC

  2. I think we have the same iPod, my friend! (Although I’m a Yankees fan!) xo

  3. So many of your favorites were favorites of mine, too…I still love the Allman Brothers.

  4. What a great playlist! I love so many of those songs, too. Well, except for “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” That song was everywhere for a while.

  5. Human League! There is a man out-there-somewhere who doesn’t know that my occasional thoughts of him are most often brought about by me accidentally hearing “I was working as a waitress at a hotel bar, that much is true.” as I pass by where a radio is playing this song.

  6. Oh my – we spent the same summers listening to the same radio formats! These bring back memories to me, too. I’m taking that playlist. 🙂

  7. I had forgotten about the Go Gos. I was in my early 20s and when to visit a friend and went to their concert. Makes me smile to think about it.

  8. Hi Jennifer! I love all of the songs you’ve listed, especially Maggie May and Elton John’s “Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart”. Thanks for bringing back memories. 🙂

  9. Loved the mandolin solo on Maggie May; loathed the rest of the song, why, I know not. Love Saturday in the Park, that’s a perfect summer song, along with the 80’s tunes. Fun!

  10. Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May” has to be up there with one of my favourite songs of all time. I saw Rod Stewart and The Small Faces perform in Melbourne in the seventies and sing that song. It was a once in a lifetime experience.

  11. I can so identify with your selections from 1976 and after. I remember doing a pom-pom routine to Centerfold…(& can actually remember some of the moves to the chorus!). I created a Spotify story for my BlogHer experience…never knew I could make one like you did above. Cool! But, then you are a techy guru!

  12. It’s so fun to read and hear some of these that I hadn’t thought of – fun to remember them. Music is so powerful to evoke memories. I know they say scent is the most powerful – but I don’t know that it can compare to music. We can remember exactly where we were and who we were in love with or giddy about when some of those old tunes play. Right?

  13. Helene Cohen Bludman :

These are great songs. Anything by Chicago always brings a wave of memories back to me.

  14. Oh the 80’s and the Go-Go’s that’s my childhood summer soundtrack.
