While watching Mashable’s Social Good Summit 2013, I was most looking forward to the panel about RYOT.org, featuring the news website’s co-founders and Ian Somerhalder, actor and part of the RYOT advisory board. Why was I looking forward to this panel on RYOT, Ian Somerhalder and Youth Impact?
It is easy to figure out why I wanted to see Ian Somerhalder. I was a big fan of Lost and am now a fan of the Vampire Diaries. He is very active in Social Good. and plays a big part at getting youth involved in social good and specifically RYOT. I am interested in Youth Impact and RYOT, not only because they are a perfect subject for Connect with your Teens, but because I believe that youth are our future and we need to get them interested in bettering our world.
What is RYOT?
RYOT is a news website that publishes mostly the same type of news as many other online news sites. The big difference is that every article adds a call to action for the reader to do something good. It doesn’t necessarily ask for money. It might just ask you to share the article or sign a petition. But, instead of reading about an injustice and getting angry, and feel stymied as to what to do, RYOT doesn’t leave you hanging. And just by visiting the website you are helping out because a portion of all ad revenue goes to charity.
Why is a Celebrity Like Ian Somerhalder Affiliated With RYOT?
Ian Somerhalder has a huge youth fan base. He has over 4 million followers on Twitter, with a huge majority of them young. And they are young activists, not slacktivists as some may think. Ian tweets meaningful content with an embedded action within and they respond. When co-founders Bryn Mooser and David Dawg were coming up with the concept for RYOT news, Ian was part of the discussions.
Do you want to have an impact on the news? Do you have teens or young adults that would like to make an impact on this world but don’t know where to start. Send them to RYOT.org. Get involved. The more you get involved with the news, rather than just reading it, the more you will care and the better the world will become.
