How To Protect Our Families Against Harmful Chemicals

Did you know that there are over 80,000 chemicals in the U.S. that have never been fully tested for their toxic effects? And the reason why is because the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 has never been updated and is almost useless. We have to let Congress know that we are not okay with this.

The Toxic Substance Control Act needs to be reformed in a way that will by truly meaningful. We need reform that will protect our health and the health of our environment.  We need chemical reform that would:

  1. Protect those especially vulnerable, such as children and communities with higher proportions of chemicals.
  2. Allow states to protect their people when the federal government fails.
  3. Require the EPA to take fast action with very harmful chemicals and set a timetable for the rest.
  4. Require public access to information of chemicals and safety.

See the NRDC (National Resource Defense Council) article, The Chemical Industry Delay Game: How the Chemical Industry Ducks Regulation of the Most Toxic Substances, for another important reason why we must get the Toxic Substance Control Act reformed as soon as possible.

What can you do? Seventh Generation, a company that sells personal care products designed with human health and the environment in mind, has created a petition for us to sign at By signing the petition, you are telling Congress it is time to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act, and protect our families from harmful chemicals, with suspected links to cancer, birth defects, asthma and more. You can also make the decision to only purchase chemical-free products for your home. After reading all of this information, I am making the change.

Seventh Generation has created this Freedom Fighter campaign to get 100,000 signatures to Stand Up For Safer Chemicals and to #FightToxins. Seventh Generation’s about page says “in our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.” The company uses recycled and post-consumer materials in its packaging, and biodegradable, and plant-based phosphate- and chlorine-free ingredients in its products.

You can do everything right for you family. You can feed them the healthiest foods. Bring them for all their checkups and make sure you all exercise. Yet there is almost nothing we can do about breathing in toxic chemicals.  However, you can sign the petition, share it with everyone you know and hope it does some good. Let hope that our children and grandchildren will have healthy air to breathe in the future.

Full Disclosure: I am being paid a small amount to post this by Seventh Generation. However, I am writing this because it is a cause I believe in and wrote exactly what I would have without the pay.
