Liberal Arts is a funny and intelligent movie about college, relationships and aging. Written, directed by and starring Josh Radnor (Ted, How I Met Your Mother), Liberal Arts is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a while. The script is brilliant and the cast top-notch.
Liberal Arts stars John Radnor as Jesse, a 35 year old college admissions officer living in NYC. His life is going nowhere until he returns to his alma mater in Ohio and meets Zibby (Elizabeth Olsen), a 19 year old college student. Their friendship and budding romance make Jesse contemplate age, college life, books and relationships in a new light.
I am a big fan of How I Met Your Mother, but I loved seeing Josh Radnor play someone other than Ted. His Jesse is a wonder to watch, showing his confusion, intelligence, caring, desperation and helpfullness with his face as well as his words. Elizabeth Olsen (sister of the Olsen twins) is a truly wonderful actress and there was great chemistry between her and Radnor.
The supporting cast is excellent with a delightful turn by Zac Efron. Richard Jenkins and Allison Janey are as fantastic as usual as Jesse’s favorite college professors.
I can’t praise Liberal Arts enough. It opens Friday, September 14, 2012 in NYC and Los Angeles.
