Kristin Chenowith, MARTINI and The Moms Toast Breast Cancer Survivors

Yesterday I attended a Breast Cancer Awareness event hosted and sponsored by The Moms and MARTINI sparkling wine. Kristin Chenowith was there to discuss her mother’s breast cancer and we also heard from three survivors, one a Radiation Oncologist and another, a breast cancer patient advocate.

Highlights of the Breast Cancer Awareness event:

1. MARTINI giving Kristin Chenowith a check for $10,000 for her charity Maddie’s Corner, to be allocated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Right Action For Women.

2. Speaker Elizabeth Chabner Thompson, MD, MPH – Learning about her company, Best Friends for Life, where the mission is to improve the patient experience and the BFFL bags that are packed full of everything a breast cancer patient needs.

3. Speaker Dee Dee Ricks – Listening to Ricks, a patient advocate, speak about helping patients navigate the system and to eliminate barriers to timely diagnose, prevention and care. She has seen first-hand how white and affluent patients receive much better care than minorities and uninsured. She quoted Harold P. Freeman of the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute of which Ricks is chairman, “Poverty should not be an offense punishable by death”.

4. Kristin Chenowith – Being thoroughly entertained and moved by her tales of her mother’s cancers and her life. After Kristin was in a bad accident this past summer, she cried to her mother, “Why Me?” Her mother gave her excellent advice. She said, “Why not you? Don’t say why me, say why not me and deal with it.”

5. Debbi Musen, breast cancer survivor and mom of The Moms, Melissa Gerstein – Listening to her speak about her battle with breast cancer.

6. Having a light lunch at Alison Eighteen, drinking delicious MARTINI Rose from their new little mini bottles  and stuffing my face with Baked by Melissa cupcakes.

I want to thank The Moms for holding this Breast Cancer Awareness event and for inviting me. It was extremely education and moving and I am glad to help out by spreading the word.
