Kinky Boots: Cyndi Lauper Songs Shine in New Broadway Musical

Kinky Boots, a new Broadway musical, based on a 2005 film, opened last night on Broadway. I was given two free tickets to see it in previews a few weeks ago. I had such a great time and so did the audience. During the standing ovation at the end, everyone was not only applauding, but couldn’t stop dancing.

Kinky Boots is a story about Charlie, a man who inherits his father’s failing shoe factory. After a chance meeting with Lola, a drag queen, they come up with a way to save the factory, by making boots for drag queens.

By far, the best thing about Kinky Boots is Cyndi Lauper’s music. I have been a fan of Cyndi Lauper since I first heard the song, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”. Who couldn’t love her and that music video? And if that wasn’t your cup of tea, you had to love “Time After Time”. She has not lost any of her genius over time. The music in Kinky Boots consists or wild upbeat tunes, funny little songs and sad ballads; and she hits a home run with all of them. (I see a Tony in her future)

Billy Porter as Lola

The cast is spectacular. Billy Porter as Lola is phenomenal. His acting will make you laugh and bring you to tears and what a voice. In a less showy part, Stark Sands is also fantastic as Charlie. Annaleigh Ashford is a riot as the factory girl with a crush on Charlie. I loved her song “A History of the Wrong Guys”.

The book of Kinky Boots by Harvey Fierstein was good, but the only part of the show I wouldn’t rave about. Most of the time I couldn’t wait for the next song to begin. Kinky Boots was directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell, and while the choreography was a lot of fun, the show was a little slow paced at time, mostly at the beginning of each act.

If you are wondering whether you can take your kids to a show with the word “kinky” in it, if they know what drag queens are, they will be fine. Easily teenagers can see this show, and possibly tweens, depending on their level of sophistication. But nothing kinky happens during the show.

Have a quick look at Kinky Boots in this short preview:

All in all, I highly recommend seeing Kinky Boots on Broadway. It is great fun. If you are shoe lover, then you really must go. The first song in the show is “The Most Beautiful Thing”, and its all about shoes! So put on your kinkiest boots and go see Cyndi Lauper’s musical, Kinky Boots.
