When your teens are bored and say they have nothing to do, it always helps if you can provide them with an answer that will keep them busy and out of trouble. While your teens might have grown out of many kids’ project kits, two new Zest Books, The Green Teen Cookbook and Sticky Fingers: DIY Duct Tape Projects, should keep them busy and productive for a long time.

Sticky Fingers: DIY Duct Tape Projects – Easy to Pick Up, Hard to Put Down

This crafty book is full of over 70 duct tape project ideas for teens. But that is not all. Sticky Fingers also includes everything that teens will need to know about creating duct tape projects and instructions on each project in the book.

Not being very crafty myself, I hadn’t realized that duct tape has become one of the hottest craft materials today. And after browsing through Sticky Fingers, I can see why. You can make almost anything with it, and in a variety of colors.

Before your teen gets to the projects, the book begins with three chapters on what they need to get started, the workstation and the basics of duct tape and working with it. By the time they make their first DIY Duct tape project, they will know what to buy and understand the directions. And then the first group of projects are “quick crafts” to start small.

Your teens will then learn to make wallets, purses, bags, jewelry, and school and room organizers. Crafty parents might want to join in and make their own projects. I wish that I had Sticky Fingers: DiY Duct Tape Projects when I was a teen. Maybe I wouldn’t be scared of crafting now.

The Green Teen Cookbook

Teen Cookbook Zest Books

The Green Teen Cookbook has recipes written by teens, for teens, for all seasons. The editor, Laurane Marchive, came up with the idea to teach teens that they can eat cheaply without resorting to junk food. The goal of the book is to help users become healthier, more eco-conscious people.

Before we get to the recipes in this cookbook, there is some talk about kitchen safety, since many teens might not have had much experience in that area. Then there is a short section on eating healthfully, seasonally, organic, locally, and about vegetarianism and fairtrade. Then there is a guide to kitchen staples and then on to the recipes.

I liked the variety of recipes and the fact that none of them looked too difficult to make. In each food category – breakfasts, salads, main courses, etc. there looked to be at least a few things that everyone would like. There are meat dishes. Green doesn’t mean this book is vegetarian, although there are vegetarian dishes. It is being healthier and more eco-conscious.

I highly recommend both these books for teenagers and recommend their use for parents also. Whether you use them together with your teens or separately, I think you will both enjoy them.
