Did you know anything about the Hunger Games books before the movie publicity made them impossible to ignore? If you want to read the next dystopian trilogy that could reach Hunger Games levels of popularity, check out the Divergent YA book Trilogy and get Divergent, the first novel in the trilogy by Veronica Roth.

Divergent YA Book Trilogy

The Divergent YA book series consists of Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant. While the main character and narrator, Beatrice, is a 16-year-old girl, I was relieved that finally, after Twilight and The Hunger Games, there is no love triangle in Divergent.

The Divergent series takes place in Chicago, in the future. The population is divided into five factions. Abnegation (selflessness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), Amity (peacefulness) and Erudite (intelligence). And then there are the factionless, a fate the others consider worse than death. Beatrice grew up in Abnegation, but never felt fully comfortable there. At age 16, all the students get tested to see which faction they truly belong in and they can choose to switch factions from the one that they grew up in. During Beatrice’s test, an anomaly occurs showing that she is fit for three different factions. Her tester whispers to Beatrice that she is going to cover it up because this means that she is divergent, and Beatrice should never let anyone know.

Insurgent 2nd Book in YA Trilogy

At choosing day, Beatrice chooses to switch to Dauntless. Each faction has initiation rites and those that don’t make it become factionless. For dauntless they involve strength and overcoming fears. Beatrice changes her name to Tris, makes new friends and enemies.  She has an immediate attraction to Four, her instructor, and finds they have more in common than she realized.  Eventually they find out that Erudite is causing problems for Abnegnation and also wants to kill all Divergents. There is also a mystery concerning what is beyond the wall surrounding the Chicago area in which they live.

Luckily I read these in ebook form, because the second I finished Divergent, I downloaded Insurgent. I couldn’t wait another minute to continue reading. The third book, Allegiant, is coming out this October of 2013.

Divergent Movie - Tris and Four

Now, to the movie. The Divergent film is set to be released on March 21, 2014 in the United States. It will star Shailene Woodley as Tris. You might remember her in her Academy Award nominated role opposite George Clooney in The Descendants. She has also been the star of the Secret Life of the American Teenager for the past 5 years. Other cast members include Kate Winslet, Theo James (the man who died in Lady Mary’s bed), Zoe Kravitz, Tony Goldwyn and Ashley Judd. I already can’t wait to see it.

I highly recommend reading the Divergent YA book series. I am loving it. These books are fairly quick reads. They are exciting. And you will be up on the big new thing before if explodes like The Hunger Games did.

  1. This definitely sounds like it could be the next big movie trilogy for teens.

  2. I loved Hunger Games, long before it became a movie. I would love to jump into these books. just FYI, your links to the books themselves aren’t clickable. I will try to find them on Amazon or at my local library. I can’t wait to get into these!

  3. I loved this book series! So excited for the movies!!

  4. Veronica Roth is one of my favorites I loved this series.

  5. I’m a huge fan of fantasy fiction, and I LOVED the Hunger Games, so I will check these out. Thanks!

  6. My niece is writing a YA book so I will alert her to this, thanks.

  7. This sounds like a great distopic trilogy. My grandson devoured the hunger games and passed them on to me. He loves to share books with me. Each time I see him he says, “did you get to the part where….?” We saw Hunger Games movie together and both sobbed when Rue died. I shared The Hobbit with him, then saw the movie. The Divergent trilogy may be just the ticket for our book-bonding experience.

  8. I definitely think Divergent is going to be the next Hunger Games. I was a little reluctant to read it because I loved THG so much and I’ve heard Divergent is just a rip-off, but I really ended up loving it. Now I’m just waiting for Insurgent to move up on my library wait list! I also am excited to see Shailene as Tris, because she was wonderful in The Descendents.

  9. LOVE LOVE LOVE this series. Anxiously awaiting Allegiant!
