Computing has been getting smaller and smaller over the years. We went from giant room sized computers to desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets and smartphones. I’ve had every one of them and yet I just did a 360 when I agreed to write a series of sponsored posts for Hewlett-Packard (HP) and was given an HP ENVY 23 TouchSmart All-in-One Desktop PC with Microsoft Windows 8. I love the LARGE SCREEN!

Actually, I was given two computers, the one above for me in NY and an HP ENVY h8 Desktop PC, HP Pavilion 23xi Diagonal IPS LED Backlit Monitor, and HP HD-5210 Webcam for my son who lives in California so that we could use them to connect. Since I love to connect with my sons through technology, I jumped at the chance to work with HP and write about these amazing desktop computers.

I had forgotten just how great it is to have a computer with such a big screen. Large screens are especially good for:

  • Watching TV and Movies
  • Allowing you to watch TV and Movies with others
  • Making Video calls on Skype are now life sized
  • Being able to read everything without the need for reading glasses
  • Being able to really appreciate the beauty and colors of Windows 8

When you think about it, many of us, if not most, now use our tablets and smartphones for travel computing, so are laptops as necessary as they used to be? I haven’t traveled with my laptop in years. And with the All-in-One HP Desktop that I chose to get, I can actually move the computer from room to room fairly easily. I wouldn’t do it every day like with a laptop, but I could if I wanted to.

I am also having so much fun having a computer with Windows 8. It is like having two computers in one. I still have my desktop, which is almost exactly like previous versions of Windows. Then there is the colorful tiled Windows 8 Start Screen. I use desktop for all my work, but go to Windows 8 for fun. It doesn’t need to be done that way, but for now, that is how I’m using my new computer.

After we got our new HP desktops set up. My son Matt and I spoke on Skype about family vacation plans. We are going out to visit him in San Francisco this summer and want to make a side trip. You can watch our talk in this video. Skype in Windows 8 does not yet have screen sharing or recording from within. (You have to turn the volume up to hear me and then down when my son is speaking, sorry).
I will be writing at least three more posts about these HP Desktops computers with Windows 8. If you have any questions or anything you want me to cover, please let me know. If you asked me before I got this new computer if I would ever go back to a desktop I probably would have said no. Yet I can’t believe how much I love it. It might be nice to have mobile devices that we can carry around, but nothing beats a large screen. In future posts I’ll be writing about other benefits of desktop computers besides the screen.

Full Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a program on behalf HP and received an ENVY 23 TouchSmart AiO and an HP ENVY h8 and other products as a thank you for my participation.

  1. Can’t hear your video but great article.

  2. Liz @ A Nut in a Nutshell :

I love my laptop for bedtime and travel, but for the rest of the day, I’m ALL desktop. I need a new one though….I can hear my hard drive protesting a little too often. 🙁

I am in love with HP! My sister has one of those All in one desktop computers from them and I’m super jealous! It is truly amazing!

  4. Danielle Simmons :

I love my desktop and don’t think I’d ever fully switch it out for a laptop. I have my office space and love that my desktop is always there for me!

  5. I have a mac, but HP seems like the prices are so much better so we are considering one in the future.

  6. I can honestly say I’m an ALL desktop kind of Gal…I rather sit on my desktop and chat, e-mail and read, no idea why, but laptops aren’t my favorite thing. Glad I’m not the only one… great article, enjoyed reading it, loved the video.

  7. I would love to have one of this. I have an HP Envy laptop.

  8. I gave up my desktop for a laptop. I really really miss the big screen, but not much else.

  9. Tough Cookie Mommy :

Honestly, I’ve been trying to get rid of my desktop for awhile because I have always found my laptops to be more convenient. These computers that you reviewed definitely made me think twice because they have amazing graphics and are so sleek.

  10. this looks awesome! i have an HP Laptop but want to get a desktop for the new home because of how much work im always doing on the computer

  11. Frugal and Fun Mom :

That is a beautiful computer screen. I wish I had one like that to hook up to my laptop computer since the screen is pretty small.
