Computing has been getting smaller and smaller over the years. We went from giant room sized computers to desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets and smartphones. I’ve had every one of them and yet I just did a 360 when I agreed to write a series of sponsored posts for Hewlett-Packard (HP) and was given an HP ENVY 23 TouchSmart All-in-One Desktop PC with Microsoft Windows 8. I love the LARGE SCREEN!

Actually, I was given two computers, the one above for me in NY and an HP ENVY h8 Desktop PC, HP Pavilion 23xi Diagonal IPS LED Backlit Monitor, and HP HD-5210 Webcam for my son who lives in California so that we could use them to connect. Since I love to connect with my sons through technology, I jumped at the chance to work with HP and write about these amazing desktop computers.

I had forgotten just how great it is to have a computer with such a big screen. Large screens are especially good for:
- Watching TV and Movies
- Allowing you to watch TV and Movies with others
- Making Video calls on Skype are now life sized
- Being able to read everything without the need for reading glasses
- Being able to really appreciate the beauty and colors of Windows 8
When you think about it, many of us, if not most, now use our tablets and smartphones for travel computing, so are laptops as necessary as they used to be? I haven’t traveled with my laptop in years. And with the All-in-One HP Desktop that I chose to get, I can actually move the computer from room to room fairly easily. I wouldn’t do it every day like with a laptop, but I could if I wanted to.

I am also having so much fun having a computer with Windows 8. It is like having two computers in one. I still have my desktop, which is almost exactly like previous versions of Windows. Then there is the colorful tiled Windows 8 Start Screen. I use desktop for all my work, but go to Windows 8 for fun. It doesn’t need to be done that way, but for now, that is how I’m using my new computer.

After we got our new HP desktops set up. My son Matt and I spoke on Skype about family vacation plans. We are going out to visit him in San Francisco this summer and want to make a side trip. You can watch our talk in this video. Skype in Windows 8 does not yet have screen sharing or recording from within. (You have to turn the volume up to hear me and then down when my son is speaking, sorry).
I will be writing at least three more posts about these HP Desktops computers with Windows 8. If you have any questions or anything you want me to cover, please let me know. If you asked me before I got this new computer if I would ever go back to a desktop I probably would have said no. Yet I can’t believe how much I love it. It might be nice to have mobile devices that we can carry around, but nothing beats a large screen. In future posts I’ll be writing about other benefits of desktop computers besides the screen.
