You probably know Jane Green as a novelist and the author of 16 New York Times best sellers. Her newest novel, Summer Secrets, published in June, had me reading it non-stop. Yet, even with all her success as a novelist, Green decided to try something new. She wrote a cookbook, Good Taste, and is self-publishing it through a Kickstarter campaign.
The Novel – Summer Secrets
Summer Secrets takes place in both London and Nantucket, MA and deals with the effects of alcoholism on family members and redemption. In her late 20’s, Cat is drinking way to much and spiraling out of control. After her mother tells her a long hidden secret, she flies to Nantucket. Cat strikes up a wonderful friendship with this new family and then ruins it all during an alcohol fueled binge.
Sixteen years later, Cat is a single mother in AA. She is finally following the program, except the only thing she hasn’t done yet is to go back to Nantucket and make amends. She finally decides to go and brings her daughter and friend with her.
The characters in Summer Secrets were so vividly drawn I felt like I knew them. And I am now dying to visit Nantucket. I am embarrassed to admit that I’ve never read any of Jane Green’s novels before this. But I will certainly be making up for that now.
The Cookbook – Good Taste
Good Taste is a combination of recipes, gorgeous photos and Jane Green’s signature warm and witty storytelling. On why Jane decided to self publish and use Kickstarter, she had this to say:
“I had no idea if there was a marketplace for a cookbook from me, hence my decision to essentially self-publish. I’ve invested a huge amount of time, hard work, and my own money to put this book together… I am truly touched and overwhelmed by the incredible support I have received from fans as soon as our Kickstarter campaign launched.” I am thrilled to have brought this incredibly special project to Kickstarter because of the creative freedom I have in creating and giving my readers what feels like a piece of my heart.” — Jane Green
Good Taste was actually fully funded within 5 days! You can learn more about the cookbook on the Good Taste Kickstarter page. If you are reading this before July 14 ends, you can still pledge and get the cookbook. It is likely that there will be more cookbooks available to sell, after Kickstarter people receive their books in October.
