When I attended the NYC Book Expo earlier this year, I received a variety of books. What stood out was that among them I found four excellent non-fiction advice type books that can have life changing results. The Power of Habit, The Tools, Stress Pandemic and The Skinny Rules are also all interesting reads.
1. The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do In Life and Business by Charles Duhigg – The Power of Habit is much more than an advice or help book. It is filled with fascinating stories from the study of habits and how by your transforming habits you can find success. You will learn how Michael Phelps, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and Martin Luther Kind Jr. discovered the right habits that were integral to their success. There are also compelling stories of how corporations found success by study peoples’ habits. And of course, there is a reader’s guide to using these ideas.
2. The Tools: Transforms Your Problems Into Courage, Confidence and Creativity by Phil Stutz and Barry Michels – Phil Stutz, a psychiatrist, wanted to find a way to for patients to be able to help themselves immediately instead of suffering during the months or years of therapy. He didn’t think that therapy should dwell fully on the past. Through trial and error, he developed specific tools that would help patients change their behavior in a way that made them feel better. He was joined by Barry Michels in an effort to teach “The Tools” to others. This book was written so that everybody could have access to these life transforming tools.
3. Stress Pandemic: The Lifestyle Solution by Paul Huljich – People are more stressed out than ever before in this fast paced world. Stress Pandemic is a guidebook of practical advice to use in our day-to-day lives. The author, after healing himself, created “Nine natural steps to mastering stress.” The Stress Pandemic contains charts and lists which help make it a very readable book.
4. The Skinny Rules: The Simple Nonnegotiable Principles for Getting Thin by Bob Harper (The Biggest Loser) – Huge best selling book for months now by The Biggest Loser star and trainer. What I love about this book is that it is comprised of 20 rules to follow to be thinner and healthier. This is not a fad diet. And I love the organization of a list of rules instead of trying to follow a complicated meal plan. Rule number one is so simple yet so smart – “Drink a large glass of water before every meal”. Why? You will stay hydrated, burn off my calories and fill up so that you will eat less!
All four of these books, The Power of Habit, The Tools, Stress Pandemic and The Skinny Rules are not only helpful, but are also very good reads.
