10 Animated Movies for Tweens in Theaters 2013

My yearly blog post of movies for teens and tweens in 2013 was so long that I decided to movie animated movies to its own posting. Since many teens don’t go to the movie theaters to see animated movies (although they watch them on DVD, Blu-ray or streaming) this list is mostly applicable to tweens anyway.

Here are the 10 big animated movies that coming that will be released this year, 2013:

1. Escape From Planet EarthRainmaker Entertainment  (2/15)

Computer animated family comedy in 3D about an astronaut and alien planets. Brendan Fraser voices the astronaut. Also with Rob Corddry, Jessica Alba, Jane Lynch and Sarah Jessica Parker (see Jane Lynch Discusses Movies, Glee, Acting and Kids after a viewing of Escape From Planet Earth)

2. The Croods  – DreamWorks Animation  (3/22)

Computer animated comedy set in the prehistoric era. Voice actors include Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone.

3. Epic – Blue Sky Studios  (5/24)

Monsters University

Computer animated fantasy drama in 3D based on the children’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs. Starring Amanda Seyfried and Josh Hutcherson.

4. Monsters UniversityPixar  (6/21)

Prequel to Monsters Inc. again starring John Goodman as Sully and Billy Crystal as Mike. Mike and Sully meet in college and become frat brothers.

5. Despicable Me 2Illumination Entertainment  (7/3)

Sequel to Despicable Me with Steve Carell as Gru.

6. TurboDreamWorks Animation  (7/19)

Computer Animated Sports Comedy about a garden snail who wants to become the fastest snail in the world. Ryan Reynolds stars as Turbo the snail.

7. PlanesDisneyToon Studios  (8/9)

Planes is a spinoff the Pixar’s Cars and Cars 2. Was originally planned for a straight to video release.

8. The Little Mermaid 3DWalt Disney Feature Animation  (9/13)
See the animated musical that began the procession of Disney’s modern day blockbuster animated films. The beloved Little Mermaid movie from 1989 is back, now in 3D.

Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers

9. Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers – Sony Pictures Animation  (9/27)

Sequel to the 2009 film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, based on Judi Barrett’s book.

10. FrozenWalt Disney Animation Studios  (11/27)

Fantasy musical comedy loosely based on the fairy tale The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson. Starring the voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff.
